Davidoff - The Original Swiss Taste
Actually, the history of Davidoff starts at the beginning of the last century in Ukraine. Zino Davidoff, the one who created this company, moved to Switzerland with his family, fleeing from the Russian occupation. He dedicated his youth to understanding and studying tobacco, its effects, and its production techniques. Stories about his trips to South America and Cuba can be read in his autobiography.
Zino Davidoff returned from Cuba with much information and many innovative ideas about how the taste of tobacco in general and cigarettes in particular can be enhanced. Upon his return, he took over his family's business and started to create and advertise new products under his own name. Before WW II, Davidoff had already become one of the most important brands in Switzerland.
The interests of Zino Davidoff weren't focused on cigarettes only. He also produced pipe and cigar tobacco, which are still sold today, more than 60 years later. However, cigarettes faced international recognition, as a special blend of local types of tobacco with a particularly soothing aroma.
Today, Davidoff is a synonym to quality, smooth cigarettes. This is particularly important (and, actually, quite of a paradox), because Swiss people have never been specifically connected to tobacco and to the production of cigarettes. Zino Davidoff succeeded on a market dominated by Anglo-American companies. In this context, he created a counterpart, proving that the tobacco production and cigarettes manufacturing is not necessarily a matter of tradition as it is the consequence of experience and hard work.
Davidoff cigarettes represent the Swiss reaction to the innumerable American brands that flooded the market in the first half of the 20th century. Contemporary varieties are, from this point of view, rather special: they don't preserve the same taste as most of their counterparts, yet they render a particular smoothness that is not to be found in any other cigarette in the world.
